{Book Review} A Piece of Cake

August 19, 2017 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 4 Comments

A Piece of Cake by Peta Peace

A Piece of Cake – Sweet and Simple Quilts from Layer Cake Squares, is the newly released book by Peta Peace from She Quilt’s A Lot.  If you have a collection of layer cakes and are searching for inspiration on ways to use them, you will love this book. Peta has designed a stunning selection of lovely quilts, both large and small, to showcase your favourite pre-cuts.  Peta has a fantastic sense of style and her designs are right on trend, pretty and bright. She uses white fabric to great effect, which really makes her designs pop.

Peta has included 14 new patterns in her book – including quilts, mini quilts, table runner, and pillows. There are plenty of projects suitable for the confident beginner, as well as some to challenge more experienced quilters. The projects are clearly written, with plenty of step by step illustrations to guide you through the construction. Peta shares her tips and tricks to achieve fantastic results. The book includes stunning photography and the hard part will be deciding which project to make first!!

Square Peg Mini Quilt

I decided on the Square Peg Mini Quilt, which features crosses in two sizes, on a white background. This is a great design to showcase some of your favourite “scraps”. I used my favourite Atsuko Matsuyama fabrics in this sample, in pretty shades of pink, blue, yellow, green, and lavender. The project instructions were well written and the project was easily made in a day.

Square Peg Mini Quilt

The mini quilt was fun to construct, and is a good size to use as a placemat or tray cloth. I quilted mine with straight lines, 1/4 inch apart, which gave it a lovely texture. I bound my quilt using the sewing machine. The binding print is mint stripe from Backyard Roses collection by Nadra Rigeway for Riley Blake which is the perfect finishing touch.

Square Peg Mini Quilt

The Square Peg Mini Quilt is a perfect afternoon tea mat.

A Piece of Cake is a great addition to your quilt library and will provide plenty of inspiration on ways to showcase your favourite layer cakes to great effect.

Very pretty, Lisa! I really love this project (and the full-size version – that fuchsia outlining is just genius). I love the mint green you’ve used and how well it matches your tea set – there’s nothing better than being able to custom make your table toppers. And as always, your photos are just beautiful!
