I always like to have a crochet project on the go – ready to pick up at night in front of the TV. I have been making some amigurumi style crochet toys recently – they are so much fun to make and are a great way to use small quantities of yarn. Last night I put the finishing touches to Gerald – the Giraffe. He looks kind of dashing with his smart red tie (kindly donated by the man of the house) and resized to fit Gerald.
The pattern for Gerald comes from Zoomigurumi 4 (which I reviewed here). He was made using a size 3 crochet hook and DMC Natura Yarn in Tournesol, Topic Brown, and Sable.
I had a little trouble applying the backing for the safety eyes (my fingers aren’t that strong). I read online to use a metal washer to assist with pressing the back of the safety eye down on the shank. I didn’t have a washer handy so improvised and used a Japanese 5 Yen coin. It now lives in my crochet basket for future eye application.
Some of the little details (like the horns) were a little fiddly but the pattern is suitable for an intermediate crocheter. It came together relatively quickly. Now to decide on my next crochet project!
