{Book Review + Giveaway} Large Block Quilts by Vickie Eapen

Vickie Eapan, the quilter from Spun Sugar Quilts, has just released her first quilt book, Large Block Quilts. The book includes 16 Quilt designs made from large blocks that are quick and easy to construct. They would be perfect for when you need to make a quilt in a hurry or for charity quilts. The designs range from modern to more traditional. Many of the designs would be suitable for those larger scale prints in your stash. The designs all combine prints with solids for a a more modern look.

Some of our favourite designs include:

One of my favourite designs was the Lantern Lights Quilt (pictured above). It is a design that works well with medium scale prints. The printed fabric used in the block is 2 1/2 inches in width so would be the perfect project to use a jelly roll. The left over printed fabrics make for a colourful scrappy binding.
I constructed a Lantern Light block from Bliss fabric, Moda (refer below). The instructions are clear and include helpful diagrams for ease of construction. The block, which measures 18 1/2 inches square, was assembled in under 15 minutes (not including the cutting time). This block is perfect for a beginner quilter as there are no tricky seams to match up.

So if you are a time poor quilter, the projects in this book will be right up your alley. They are all quickly assembled. The hard part will be deciding which quilt to make first!

That looks like a useful book for fast quilts. I’ve been working on some of my own ideas, but it would be nice to have a book with exact measurements for a quilt all laid out.

I like the idea of the Lantern Light block being so forgiving with matching of seams. I can’t wait to try out the book’s Hidden Baskets pattern too.

I also like the “Hidden Baskets” design. Maybe because it’s simple yet looks complex. I think it would also be great to experiment with color combinations, textures, etc.

Thanks for your blog post about Vickie’s book. I need a quilt pattern for my grandson and I believe the one of “circles” looks like bike wheels. He races BMX. Thanks for the opportunity to win a book.

OMG – what an amazing book. This book looks like what I have been searching for – relatively new to patchwork, I love simple but stunning blocks that are of a modern style.
Thanks so much for doing this review – definately a book for my want/need list.
